Panel Instructions and Costs
Material
- Use plywood. Two sheets cost about $80. Twin size beds need only one sheet.
- Don't use Oriented Strand Board (OBS) or Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF).
Thickness
- Panels should be ¾” thick (23/32).
Size
See the Panel Size Chart for suggested sizes. Note that for Full, Queen, and King size mattresses, two 4'x8' sheets are required. Consider the size of your vehicle when choosing panel sizes and box configurations.
Cutting Service
Most lumber stores like Home Depot and Lowes will cut the plywood for you, for free. Just tell a lumber associate the plywood and the dimensions you want.
Delivery Service
Home Depot and Lowes will deliver the panels to your home for about $80 extra. If you also need the cutting service, go to or call the “Pro” counter to arrange your delivery. Otherwise you can order the plywood with delivery online. Another option is to rent a truck from the rental counter which is only $19 for the first 75 minutes.
Sanding and Finishing
Since the panels will be underneath your mattress and only the edge will be visible, you don’t need to finish them, but you might want to sand the edge with some 150 grit sandpaper to remove any splinters. Feel free to stain or paint the panels entirely or just the edges that show.
Securing
Use non-skid rug pads between the boxes and panels and between the panels and mattress to prevent sliding (optional).
